Mandarin House Shanghai Chinese Language Program

Learn Mandarin in the heart of Shanghai through internationally accredited small-group or private courses, with flexible study options and an immersive city experience.

What this is

This is an in-person Chinese language program at Mandarin House's Shanghai school, located at People's Square, just off Nanjing Road, within walking distance of the Bund and served by four subway lines. Mandarin House has been teaching Mandarin since 2004. In Shanghai you can choose between Intensive Courses, Part-Time Courses, Private Tutoring, Business Chinese, and Summer Camp programs, with the Intensive track offered in three formats: Comprehensive G30 (6 lessons/day, all four skills), Conversational G20 (4 lessons/day, speaking-focused), and Reading & HSK G10 (2 lessons/day, character-focused). All lessons run 45 minutes, Monday to Friday, with flexible intake and start dates. The school is also a registered HSK test center.

Who it's for

This suits anyone relocating to or spending time in Shanghai who wants structured, full-time language immersion rather than casual study — students choose their intensity based on their goal: Conversational G20 if you want to be functional in daily spoken Chinese fast, Comprehensive G30 if you want full literacy and fluency for academic or professional life in China, or Reading & HSK G10 if character literacy or HSK exam prep is the priority. Minimum age for these adult intensive courses is 16.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16 for group courses
  • Student visa may be required depending on your nationality and course duration
  • Course location selection (Shanghai, Beijing, other city, or online) specified at application

What you get

  • Small-group, private, intensive, or part-time Chinese courses
  • Business Chinese and HSK preparation options
  • Placement into the appropriate language level
  • Classes taught by qualified full-time Mandarin teachers
  • Optional airport pickup and accommodation support
  • Access to an official HSK Test Centre

Why this is useful

One of Mandarin House's biggest advantages is flexibility. Instead of offering a single study path, you can choose between intensive, part-time, private, business, or HSK-focused programs depending on how quickly you want to progress and what you're learning Mandarin for.

The school has also been teaching international students since 2004 and has welcomed more than 50,000 students from over 100 countries. Its teachers are full-time, professionally trained, and use proprietary learning materials that are updated regularly rather than relying solely on standard textbooks.

Location is another major draw. The campus sits just off Nanjing Road near People's Square, within walking distance of the Bund and multiple subway lines, making it easy to explore Shanghai while practicing your Mandarin outside the classroom every day.
